Fossil Butte Closed for Winter Holidays and Sundays

Kemmerer, WY– The Fossil Butte National Monument visitor center will be closed for Federal holidays over the 2018/2019 winter. This includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, and President’s Day.  Starting in December, the visitor center will also be closed on Sundays. With these exceptions, the visitor center’s normal winter hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When the visitor center is closed, the public is still welcome to visit the monument and hike the trails.  Hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing are permitted throughout the monument, including on the seasonally-closed Scenic Drive road.  Visitors can also explore outdoor interpretive exhibits, including the geologic timeline and the new quarry exhibit near the visitor center parking lot. Hunting is not permitted in the monument.

The Scenic Drive road is currently open, and will remain open as weather permits. Drivers should use caution when moisture is present on the non-paved portion of the road (North of the picnic area).

Fossil Butte was set aside to protect diverse, abundant, and well-preserved fossils from the Eocene Epoch in the Green River Formation. It is also home to a high desert sagebrush ecosystem. The visitor center, which displays more than 300 fossils, is open from 8:00am-4:30pm. For more information about Fossil Butte, visit <> , call 307-877-4455, or follow #FossilButteNPS on social media. There is no charge to enter the monument.
