Cold Weather Safety: Stay Prepared, Stay Safe

Cold weather brings unique challenges that require awareness, preparation, and teamwork. Here’s how workers and employers can minimize risks:

Key Tips for Employers:

  • Train Workers: Recognize and respond to cold stress symptoms.
  • Provide Gear: Supply insulated, wind-resistant clothing and proper footwear.
  • Create Safe Conditions:
    • Reduce cold exposure by rotating tasks or adjusting schedules.
    • Offer access to warm areas and ensure heating systems work efficiently.
  • Monitor & Equip: Use buddy systems and stock first aid kits with hot packs and thermometers.

Tips for Workers:

  • Protect Yourself:
    • Wear layers and keep extremities warm.
    • Stay dry—avoid wet clothing at all costs.
  • Stay Vigilant: Watch for signs of cold-related issues in yourself and coworkers.
  • Take Breaks: Warm up regularly and stay hydrated and nourished.

Prevention is Key:

Following safety practices and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines can help everyone stay protected. By working together and staying vigilant, employers and workers can create safer environments indoors and out.
